Simple Success Manifesto – My Latest Book

Simple Success ManifestoDo you ever feel that no matter what you do or buy, it’s never enough? It always seems like there’s more to accomplish or accumulate. No wonder so many of us seem to be in a state of perpetual dissatisfaction and stress.

There is an alternative.

It’s possible to develop your own personal version of success to live every day with more meaning and fulfillment. I show you how in my free online book, Simple Success.

You can read it here, but in this post I’d like to talk about the creative process of getting your work out into the world.

The Process of Writing

I’ve been working on this book for a long, long time. In fact, it’s still not finished. No matter how many times I edit it, there’s always something I don’t like or mistakes I’ve missed.

I’m experimenting with publishing it online as a website because I want it to be a dynamic, living document that gets edited and improved overtime. In the past, I’ve called this an unbook.

I’d like to get better at getting my ideas and projects out in the world faster . This is a critical skill in this new economy we are in. I’ve been calling it the IdeaEconomy. Speed of execution and early feedback are critical factors in delivering products the world wants.

There is a constant trade-off between perfectionism and execution. I could always do one more edit or wait until it’s a little better. Of course, I could wait my whole life and it might never be perfect. Publishing it as an unbook like this, allows me to get it out in the world faster than I normally would.

I’m still not a very good writer, but one thing I know for sure is that the more I write, the better I get.

One of the best writing skills I’ve gained is the ability to delete. It’s very easy to write a lot, but culling that content down to the core essentials is a much more difficult skill to master. In Simple Success, I’ve tried to write as little as I could to get the ideas across. To do that, I had to delete more than double the amount of content that ended up in the final version.

A lot of work went into coming up with catchy subjects for each chapter to best articulate each idea. I’m not sure how readers will respond, but this is my first major attempt to improve my writing. I feel that good writing skills are also essential to this IdeaEconomy. Everyone is a writer now, so it’s important to take deliberate action to improve. Getting ideas out into the world is an art form that can be learned.

To Create is To Be Human

It can be difficult to truly express ourselves. Putting original ideas or art in front of the world risks ridicule and criticism. No one likes to hear anything negative about their work.

The problem is that if we are not putting ourselves out there, if we are not challenging ourselves, then we aren’t fully living. To create is to be human.

It has taken me several decades to start building up the courage to really express my authentic self and I still have a long way to go. However, I’ve started to realize that the more I can be myself, the more my ideas and thinking resonate with other people. Trying to be like someone else is a recipe for mediocrity.

I still have a lot of work ahead to develop a fully authentic voice, but everything I write gets me a little closer.
